FOR N EVER
But now fate
approaches and the hours breathe softly
the sands of time have turned to gold
Edgar Allen Poe
The video shows fleeting gestures: filling a cup, letting thoughtfully lost sand trickle through your fingers, waving.
They are projected as shadows onto the wall.
«The gesture = the most fleeting, unlikely and truest moment of an action. The gesture is something one would not have thought of paying attention to». (R. Barthes)
And Jacques Dalcroze writes: «A gesture is not only the physical movement, but also the pausing of this movement».
Gestures of transition, of not-yet or not-more, are usually not consciously perceived in their own presence.
In their conscious perception, fleeting duration is inscribed. Through the loop it can be experienced in its physical presence.
This creates a tension between volatility and duration, being present and being absent.
To grasp what has passed ... with your hand open.
«It seems tremendously difficult to really capture or take over the in-between as between and not to misunderstand it as a place of passage». (U. Guzzoni)
The loop is in its technical design an impossibility, since the gestures are not possible in a continuous sequence «without a jump».
Thus, there remains only a countless repetition of the same, always getting involved anew with the events, «paying attention» to the gesture until the «leap» leads to a satisfying rhythmization.
The soundtrack consists of speaking the above quotation in a way that envelops each letter in extended exhalations and inhalations (as a pause).
The text is more breath than articulation and only partially understandable on the content level.
